This course goes beyond mere survival and delves into the long-term skills of “living off the land” where we focus on traps, hunting tools, & food procurement. You will walk away with the basics of both modern and primitive methods for feeding yourself in the wilds or providing for your family during the lean times.
- Identifying the top ten wild plants in North America.
- Common poisonous plants and deadly look-alikes.
- Carving deadfalls, tips for trap placement, using lures & baits, and how to fashion a Hopi bird snare.
- Emergency food supplies: a look at what basic staples to have on hand at home and long-term food storage considerations.
- Making jerky, pemmican, and food preservation methods.
We will also discuss relevant hunting gear such as small-game rifles, slingshots, survival fishing gear, and more. This class is held in accordance with Arizona State Game and Fish Laws.
Hiking is minimal and we will be carpooling to different locations in and around Flagstaff each day for identifying wild foods in different ecosystems. Directions and a gear list will be sent out upon registration. Each day runs from 9 am to 5 pm. This is a non-overnight class and participants need to provide their own lodging and meals.
